Introducing Dr Edward Kosy

Dr Edward Kosy purchased the longest established Orthodontic Practice in the Hunter Valley in 2005 and rebranded it ABC Orthodontics. Started in the year 1968 by Dr Keith Mills, the Newcastle practice is located on the 3rd floor of the AMP Chambers at 57 Hunter Street. Along with the contemporary new look for the practice, Dr Kosy also brings the latest in technological advances to Newcastle, resulting in what many believe to be the leading orthodontic treatment available in the region.

Dr Kosy has a long history of providing dental services to the local community. After completing his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Sydney University in 1988, he ran his own highly successful dental practice in the Newcastle district for 13 years.

In 2000 Dr Kosy was one of the first 3 people in Australia to be invited to enter the three year Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry - Orthodontics programme in Orthodontics at the University of Adelaide, a school which is world-renowned for its orthodontic training. He commenced the programme in 2001 and during this time, gained extensive experience in the treatment of juvenile, adolescent and adult orthodontic problems.

Dr. Kosy completed numerous courses in special needs orthodontics, which included the management of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and cleft lip and palate treatment. In fact, whilst working as a senior registrar at the Adelaide Dental Hospital, he was also detached to work in conjunction with the Adelaide Craniofacial Unit at the Women's and Children's Hospital and the Cleft Lip and Palate Unit at Flinders University Hospital.

His primary Doctorate research was a joint project between The University of Adelaide, Orthodontic Department and the Department of Oral Neurophysiology, using Surface Electromyography to measure the reflex control of the Jaw Closing Muscles prior to and during orthodontic treatment.

In 2003, whilst in his final year of his Doctorate programme, he travelled abroad and successfully completed the Diploma Membership of Orthodontics examination of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Orthodontics, the highest honour for practicing orthodontists in the European Union. Dr. Kosy was one of the first Australian orthodontic postgraduates to pass this examination whilst still completing his Australian Qualifications. Dr. Kosy has been awarded the Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics from the University of Adelaide and is a certified member of The Australian Orthodontic Board.

In 2004, he returned to Newcastle with his wife Julie, and young family to commence practice in specialist orthodontics. The primary focus of his practice is to provide the people of the Hunter Valley with world-class orthodontic treatment.

Dr Kosy has been a Newcastle Division of the Australian Dental Association committee member for 10 years and also president/chairman of this organization. He regularly attends continuing education seminars and conferences both in Australia and internationally, enabling him to deliver the latest orthodontic technology and techniques to his patients.

Dr Kosy has taught Clinical Orthodontics to undergraduate dental students at Adelaide University and currently teaches Clinical Orthodontics to Post Graduate Orthodontic students enrolled in the Specialist Orthodontic Course at Sydney University Orthodontic Department.
