Breakages : What You Can Do
Broken or disturbed appliances can often occur during your orthodontic care. If there is any disturbance such as loose bands, broken or poking wires, please call our practice so we may evaluate the urgency of the problem and schedule you to be seen accordingly.
In the interim, the following information may remedy some of the problems you may encounter until you can be seen:
If a wire is irritating your mouth, cover it with orthodontic wax.
A broken archwire or one that is irritating the gum or cheek tissue, needs to be seen as soon as possible for replacement or adjustment.
A loose band or bracket can generally be left in place until you are seen at our practice.
Bent headgear, facebow or removable appliance that is not fitting well is not to be worn until it can be properly adjusted.
A broken appliance needs to be seen as soon as possible for removal or replacement.
If a retainer cracks, this is NOT an emergency. However, we want to prevent your teeth from shifting so call us the next business day to schedule the repair.
If you experience soreness from treatment, rinse your mouth with warm salt water and take a pain reliever, if necessary.
If your emergency is directly tooth related, such as a broken tooth, then you may be best to visit your general dentist. We are happy to take your call to discuss your concern.
